- Childhood trauma is the experience of an event by a child that is emotionally painful or distressful which often results in lasting mental and physical effects.
Overview
The Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition was begun in 2005 by a group of over 25 agencies and individuals. They saw a need to raise awareness about childhood trauma, promote a system for the treatment of childhood trauma, and provide training on childhood trauma to professionals who work with children.
Since its inception, the Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition has grown to over 47 organizations, represented by over 65 individuals. There are two committees. The Professional Development Committee is examining the demands and capacity of professionals address childhood trauma. The Systems Analysis Committee is exploring the systems serving children and families that may have a role in preventing or treating childhood trauma. There is also the Stories Work Group which coordinates the development and distribution of the animated DVD series "Stories for Children that Grownups Can Watch."
The Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition is an advocacy group and as such, does not provide direct services to children and families.
